Main Idea: God loves us. Gospel: John 3:16-17 Materials: You will be telling stories after the discussion. If you don't already have one, you may want to buy a blank journal book or a notebook so you, or someone else in the family, can write down the stories as people tell them. Family members would probaly enjoy reading them later. It is important to remember that this is a storytelling session, with the focus on listening. Don't let writing the stories down get in the way of this. |
Disciples of Mission Family Activities
The Fourth Sunday of Lent
Opening Prayer: Holy Spirit of God, come into our harts. Bless us and guide our sharing. Listening to the Gospel: Ask someone to read the passage from John's Gospel. Discussion: Now talk about the passage, using the following ideas to guide you. With preschool children: What are some presents you've gotten that you've really liked ? Who gave them to you? How did you feel when you got them? With primary grade children: Why do people give you presents? Do you give presents to anyone? Why? With preteens: Do presents have to be things? What else can be a gift---a promise, a letter, an action? What do you think are the best presents? Why? |

Making Connections
Jesus is God's gift to us. God gave us Jesus to be our friend, our brother, and our savior. This is the best present of all! And God did this all because he loves us.
Activity Have everyone get comfortable and tell them to get ready to listen. One at a time, each familymember tells a story---a true one---that answers the question: "How do you know God loves you?" The stories tell events in peoples lives that made them realize how much God cares for them and loves them. The stories can be sudden, dramatic realizations, or just as important, quiet insights. If this is hard for people to do, family members may also bring a photograph or some object that means alot to them, and talk about why it is important to them. Emphasize with your children that it is important to listen carefully and let each person talk without inter- Memory Verse: God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son. (John 3:16) |
Closing Prayer: When everyone has told his or her story, pray together:
God our Father, Amen. |
