The First Sunday of Lent
Opening Prayer Holy Spirit of God, come into our harts. Bless us and guide our sharing. Listening to the Gospel Have one person read the Gospel out loud. Discussion Talk about the Gospel, using the following suggestions to guide you. With preschool children: Can you remember a time when you felt sorry ? What happened ? With primary grade children: What does being sorry mean to you ? Think of a time when you were sorry for something you did. How did you feel ? What did you do ? With preteens: Is feeling sorry enough when you've done something you regret ? Do you need to say something ? Do something ? What happens when you can't do anything directly to make up for what you did ? |
IF A MAN HAS A HUNDRED SHEEP AND ONE OF THEM GOES ASTRAY, WILL HE NOT LEAVE THE NINETY-NINE IN THE HILLS AND GO IN SEARCH OF THE STRAY ? AND IF HE FINDS IT, SAY AMEN. I SAY TO YOU, HE REJOICES MORE OVER IT THAN OVER THE NINETY-NINE THAT DID NOT STRAY.

Making Connections
Jesus wants only good things for us, because he loves us. When we do things that are wrong, the best thing for us to do is realize it, say we're sorry and try to do better. sometimes we need to change to hear the Good News Jesus brings. Activity On the sheet of poster board, ask everyone to draw and then color in a desert, using the crayons or magic markers. It can be realistic or very abstract, depending on the abilities and preferences of family members. Talk about what a desert is like: sandy, dusty, with very little water and not many trees or plants or animals. It's very hard to live in a desert. But with plenty of water the desert can bloom. Than use the construction paper to cut out figures of trees, bushes, flowers, grasses, ponds, and streams. Glue them on to the poster board. Talk about how Jesus wants us to be sorry for what we've done wrong. And Jesus brings good things to our lives when we try to do better, when we turn back to God. Put up the poster board as a reminder of how Jesus makes our lives bloom. Memory Verse Turn back to God and believe the good news ! (Mark 1:15) |
Closing Prayer: When you have finished the activity, pray together:
Jesus hear us. We have done things that are wrong, and we're sorry. Jesus hear us. We have hurt others and ourselves, and we're sorry. Jesus hear us. Help us to know what to do about it and help us do better. Jesus hear us. Bring us a new life. Amen. |
