Cincinnati Music Center: (1936) These half dollar coins wre struck to commemorate the 5th anniversary in 1936 of Cincinnati as the center of music. Designed by Constance Ortmayer of Washington D.C shows the head of Stephen Foster and the back shows a women playing a harp.
Cleveland Great Lakes Exposition: (1936) In 1936 a special 50 cent coin was authorized to commemorate the centennial celebration in Cleveland, Ohio for the Great Lakes Exposition held there. The designs were prepared by Brenda Putnam with the bust of Moses Cleaveland on the front and a map of the Great Lakes region, a compass pointed at Cleveland with the Nine Great Lakes cities marked by stars on the back.
Columbia, South Carolina Sesquicentennial: (1936) A.Wolfe Davidson designed a souvenir half dollar to help finance the celebrations marking the sesquicentennial of the founding of Columbia in 1786.The front bears the figure of Justice with sword & scales. A palmetto tree is on the back which is the State emblem.
Columbian Exposition Half Dollar: (1892-1893) This was the first United States commemorative half dollar. Minted for the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago (1893) and sold for a dollar each. Designed by Olin Lewis Warner. The front showed the bust of Columbus and was engraved by C.E.Barber. The back engraved by G.T.Morgan showed the flagship Santa Maria above two hemispheres
Connecticut Tercentenary: (1935) Henry Kreis designed this silver half dollar coin to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Colony of Connecticut. The reverse shows the famous "Charter Oak Tree" and the obverse shows an eagle. According to legend the Royal Charter was hid in the tree until the King (James II) was overthown in 1688.
Delware Tercentenary: (1936) This half dollar was a souvenir issue designed by Carl L. Schmitz for the 300th anniversary of the Swedes landing in Delware, Wilmington to be exact. The Old Swedes Church is on the front and their ship the Kalmar Nyckel is on the back. The coin was authorized in 1936, minted in 1937 and dated 1938 on the reverse and 1936 on the front.
Elgin,Illinois Centennial: (1936) A special issue of half dollars in 1936 marked the 100th anniversary of the founding of Elgin. The profits went to funding a Pioneer Memorial Statue which is shown on the reverse of the coin. Designed by Trygve Rovelstad who also designed the Statue which was never built
Battle of Gettysburg: (1936) This half dollar was authorized by Congress on June 16, 1936 to commemorate the 1863 Battle of Gettysberg. Designed by Pittsburgh sculptor Frank Vittor the coin shows portraits of Union and Confederate solders on the front and two shields are shown on the back representing the Union and Confederate armies.
Grant Memorial - Silver: (1922) Designed by Laura Gardin Fraser in 1922 this souvenir half commemorated the birth of Ulysses S. Grant (April 27, 1822). The reverse shows the frame house in Point Pleasant, Ohio where Grant was born and the front has the bust of Grant. On first issues a star appeared above the word Grant (obverse) which was removed creating a second variety.
Hawaiian Sequicentennial: (1928) This half dollar commemorated the 150th anniversary of the landing of Captain James Cook in the Hawaiian Islands in 1778. The design sketch made by Juliette May Fraser of Honolulu was made to a mold by Chester Beach. On the front is the likeness of Captain Cook and on the back is pictured a native chief.
