{ Half Dollars }
Collecting U.S. Coins by Type.
A type set of American coins will consist of the following: {Halfs
& Dollars}
Liberty
or Bust Half Dollars
The half dollar is another venerable coin authorized
by the Act of April 2, 1792. Early half dollars featured the traditional head of
Liberty. Until 1836, the value appeared around the rim. The Liberty head was changed
in 1839 to Liberty seated.
Barber
Half Dollar
Designed by the chief engraver of the Mint, the Charles E. Barber
half dollar was minted from 1892 to 1915. His initial B is at the bottom of the neck..
Walking
Liberty Half Dollar
Because of their size and design, a display of Walking
Liberty half dollars is an impressive one indeed. On all 1916 and some 1917 coins,
the mint mark appears on the obverse.
Franklin
Half Dollar
Printers were delighted when Ben Franklin, who asked that his
epitaph name his profession as printer, was given the credit due him in 1948. The
reverse shows the well- known Liberty Bell.
Fortunately, old Ben lived much longer
than the coin minted in his honor. The shot heard 'round the world produced yet another
coin commemorating a late president.
Kennedy
Half Dollar
The Kennedy half dollar completed a cycle begun many years ago,
in 1909, by the Lincoln cent. For the first time in the history of the United States,
all coins minted in 1964 depict former presidents.
Despite its high mintage,
the Kennedy half dollar disappeared from circulation. One reason is that it is one
of the few coins sought by noncollectors. The reason for this, of course, is the
popularity of the late president and his untimely death.
Note:
It's your hobby, you decide what and how you want to
collect.
