{ Half Dimes & Dimes }
Collecting U.S. Coins by Type.
A type set of American coins will consist of the following: { Half Dimes & Dimes
}
Half
Dime
The half dime was one of the early coins of our nation. Authorized by
the Act of April 2, 1792, it lasted until 1873. Until 1829 it showed no value anywhere on
its obverse or reverse.
Liberty Head
or Bust Dime
Until 1837, the dime showed the traditional Liberty head that
adorned our coinage of the time. There are four major varieties of this coin. First
minted in 1796, it was superseded by the Liberty Seated dime.
Liberty
Seated Dime
Showing Liberty seated, this coin, with four major changes, lasted
until 1891. Its design was the same as the designs of the quarter and half dollars
of the era.
Liberty
Head Dime
The Liberty Head dime is also called the Barber dime, after its
designer, Charles E. Barber. It was minted from 1892 to 1916.
Mercury
Dime
The name "Mercury dime" is incorrect. The head is really Liberty;
the wings symbolize liberty of thought. The bundle of sticks on the obverse is from
an old Roman design.
Roosevelt
Dime
Issued in commemoration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt following
his death, the Roosevelt dime is popular among beginning collectors because all years
and mint marks from 1965 on up can still be found in circulation.
